Le nom est porté dans le Limousin (87, 23), la Charente et le Lot-et-Garonne. Variantes : Desaphi, Desaphie, Desaphis, Desaphix, Desafit, Desafy. Il désigne celui qui habite un lieu-dit "les Affis" ou en est originaire. Le toponyme pourrait avoir le sens de "fief" (sens donné par La Curne de Sainte-Palaye). Il est présent sur la commune de Brillac (16) et sur celle de Saint-Sornin-Leulac (87), où il est écrit aujourd'hui "La Zaphix" (Lezafit sur la carte de Cassini, les Affis ou les Affix aux XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles). Il est également possible que le hameau de Saphy à Saint-Eutrope-de-Born (47) ait la même origine.
